How does a hookah work?

A hookah, or water pipe, consists of a bowl, a stem, a glass base with water and a hose. The coals heat the flavored tobacco in the bowl. When you draw air through the hose, the smoke travels down the stem into the water in the hookah base, bubbles up and comes out through the hose. Read the full guide with every part explained →

0 min · Fill the base

Pour fresh cold water into the hookah base before every session, so the downstem sits about one inch under the surface; with a glass base you can see the level clearly.

How long does a hookah last?

One bowl usually lasts about an hour, and a relaxed session can run from 45 minutes to two hours. A bigger bowl, more shisha tobacco and steady, moderate heat make the smoking session last longer; too many coals burn through the flavor faster.

How to pick your first flavor

Start with one simple flavor you already like, such as mint, grape or watermelon. Once you know what you enjoy, try a two-flavor mix: see our best hookah flavors and best flavor mixes.

Hookah tastes burnt or bitter

Likely cause
Too much heat: too many coals, coals placed too close, or shisha packed up to the rim so it touches the foil or the heat management device. Overheated shisha adds a burnt flavor to the smoke.
What to do
Remove one coal or move the coals to the edge, leave a small gap under the heat, and repack the bowl loosely.

Glossary

Hookah terms, explained

The words you will see in our guides and product specs.

Base
The glass or acrylic vase at the bottom that holds the water. Also called the vase.
Stem
The shaft between the bowl and the base. The smoke travels down through it into the water.
Downstem
The lower part of the stem that sits in the water. The water level is measured from its tip.
Bowl
The cup on top of the stem that holds the shisha. Made of clay, ceramic, silicone or glass.
Phunnel bowl
A bowl with a single raised center hole, so the shisha juices stay in the bowl instead of running down the stem.
Egyptian bowl
A traditional bowl with several small holes in the bottom.
Heat management device (HMD)
A metal cap that sits on the bowl and holds the coals instead of foil. Vents let you raise or lower the heat.
Kaloud
A popular brand of heat management device; the name is often used for any HMD.
Foil
Thin aluminum sheet stretched over the bowl and poked with small holes, the classic alternative to an HMD.
Tray
The plate under the bowl that catches ash and holds spare coals.
Grommet
A rubber or silicone seal between parts, such as bowl and stem or hose and port, that keeps air out.
Purge valve
A one-way valve on the stem that lets you blow out stale smoke from the base.
Diffuser
A small attachment on the downstem that splits the smoke into many small bubbles, so the session sounds quieter.
Hose and mouth tip
The hose carries the smoke from the base to you; the mouth tip is the handle at its end.
Molasses catcher
A small cup between the bowl and the stem that collects excess shisha juice.
Coconut coals
Natural coals pressed from coconut shells. They take about 8 to 12 minutes to light and burn evenly for a long time.
Quick-light coals
Coals with an accelerant that light in about a minute.
Shisha
The flavored tobacco smoked in a hookah: tobacco leaf mixed with molasses or honey, glycerin and flavor.
Packing
How you fill the bowl with shisha. Fluffy, loose packs let air pass; dense packs restrict the draw.
Session
One hookah from the first draw until the shisha is finished, usually about an hour.
Draw
How the air feels when you pull on the hose. A tight draw needs effort, an airy draw is light and fast.
Heat-up
The first minutes after the coals go on, while the bowl warms up and the smoke builds.
Mix
Two or more shisha flavors packed together in one bowl, either layered or blended.
Premix
A shisha that the maker sells already blended from several flavors, ready to pack as it is.
Blonde leaf
Lightly processed tobacco leaf used in most mainstream shisha, usually wetter and with bright fruit flavors.
Dark leaf
Darker, more fermented tobacco leaf used by brands such as Tangiers and Darkside, with a richer tobacco taste.
