Which Hookah Bowl for Your Tobacco
Pick the kind of shisha you smoke to see which bowl type suits it, how much to pack and how much heat it needs, then the bowls in stock that fit.
- Bowl type
- Traditional or Turkish
- Pack
- 15–20 g, below the rim
- Heat
- Foil or HMD
Classic blonde leaf blends such as Al Fakher are drier, so a traditional or Turkish-style bowl with holes in the dish works well and gives an easy, even draw.
- Bowl type
- Phunnel
- Pack
- 15–20 g, up to the rim
- Heat
- Foil or HMD
Juicy modern blends hold a lot of molasses; a phunnel bowl keeps it in the dish so the flavor lasts and nothing drips into the stem.
- Bowl type
- Phunnel or killer
- Pack
- A smaller bowl, about 15 g
- Heat
- More heat, HMD recommended
Dark leaf needs more heat and a stronger draw: a killer bowl with a flat dish and thick walls, or a small phunnel with a heat management device, gives a steady, strong session.
Hookah bowls guide

What Is a Hookah Bowl?
A hookah bowl, also called a shisha bowl or hookah head, sits on top of the hookah stem and holds the shisha. You pack the tobacco into the bowl, cover it with foil or a heat management device and put the hookah coals on top; the heat from the coals warms the shisha and the smoke is pulled down through the stem. The shape of the dish, the size of the airflow holes and the material of the bowl decide how evenly the shisha heats, how long a session lasts and which tobacco suits it best, so each bowl type gives a different smoking experience.
Bowl types
Types of Hookah Bowls

Phunnel bowls
A raised center spire with one hole on top, so the shisha juice stays in the bowl instead of dripping into the stem. A phunnel hookah bowl works with any tobacco and is the usual choice for juicy modern blends.

Traditional (Egyptian) bowls
A concave dish with several small holes in the bottom. The classic Egyptian hookah bowl is simple and easy to set up and suits drier, classic blonde leaf blends; very juicy shisha can drip through the holes.

Turkish-style bowls
A traditional Turkish shape with holes in the dish and a wide rim, usually made of clay. A good everyday bowl for classic blends.

Vortex bowls
Like a phunnel, but with three or four small holes on the side of the spire instead of one on top. Vortex and funnel bowls both keep the juice from draining into the stem; a vortex gives a slightly tighter draw.

Killer bowls
Also called evil bowls: a flat-bottomed dish, thick walls that retain heat and spread it evenly, and several large holes. A killer bowl is usually packed fuller and gives a stronger session. It is often paired with dark leaf and a heat management device.

HMD-ready bowls
Bowls with a rim or inner lip that fits a heat management device such as the Kaloud Lotus. Most HMDs sit best on a bowl with a top about 3 inches in diameter; Kaloud Samsaris bowls are made for Lotus devices.
Materials

Clay, Ceramic, Silicone or Glass
| Material | Heat | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Even heat, retains it well for longer sessions | The most common hookah bowl material. Glazed clay bowls do not soak up flavor, so you can change shisha flavors; unglazed bowls are porous, absorb juice and become a favorite bowl for one flavor. Dense stoneware clay is less porous and very durable. Handle with care: clay can crack from a drop or a sudden temperature change. | |
| Heats faster, a little less even | Ceramic bowls are thinner and lighter than traditional clay, often with a smooth glaze that is easy to clean. | |
| Conducts heat less evenly, watch the coals | Durable and practically shatterproof, easy to rinse, a good travel and first bowl. | |
| Less even, needs careful heat | Does not absorb any flavor and looks striking, but is more fragile. |
Step by step
How to Pack a Hookah Bowl
Fluff the shisha. Break up any clumps with your fingers so the tobacco is loose and airy.
Fill the bowl loosely. Sprinkle the shisha in evenly, without pressing it down, up to just below the rim so it never touches the foil or HMD.
Keep the center open. In a phunnel bowl, clear a small opening in the middle of the shisha, the same size as the hole in the spire under it, so air can flow; in a traditional bowl simply leave a small gap below the rim.
Cover and add the coals. Foil with small holes or a heat management device, then the hookah coals, with the bowl already on the hookah. Full step-by-step: how to pack a hookah bowl.
How much shisha

Bowl Size and Tobacco
A standard hookah bowl takes about 15 to 20 grams of shisha. Small bowls for one person hold about 10 to 15 grams, and large bowls for a group hold 20 to 25 grams and can last well over an hour. Where the maker lists it, the table above shows how much tobacco each bowl in stock takes. A smaller bowl heats faster and suits dark leaf; a larger bowl gives a longer session with blonde leaf.
Care

How to Clean a Hookah Bowl
Let the bowl cool completely, empty the used shisha, then rinse it with warm water and a soft brush, without soap. Dry it fully before the next session. Never put a hot clay bowl under cold water: sudden temperature changes can crack clay and ceramic.

Questions
Hookah Bowls FAQ
What type of hookah bowl is best?
It depends on your tobacco. A phunnel bowl works with any shisha and keeps the juice in the bowl, so it is the safest all-round choice. Classic blonde leaf blends also work well in a traditional or Turkish-style bowl, and dark leaf is often smoked in a killer bowl or a small phunnel.
What is the best hookah bowl material?
Glazed clay is the most popular: it heats evenly and does not hold on to old flavors. Silicone is unbreakable and easy to clean, and glass does not absorb any flavor but needs careful heat.
How much shisha do I put in a hookah bowl?
About 15 to 20 grams for a standard bowl, 10 to 15 grams for a small bowl and 20 to 25 grams for a large one. Pack it loosely up to the rim, but not over it.
What is the difference between a phunnel and a traditional bowl?
A phunnel bowl has one hole on top of a raised spire, so juice stays in the bowl. A traditional (Egyptian) bowl has several holes in the bottom of the dish, so very juicy shisha can drip into the stem.
Do I need a special bowl for a heat management device?
Not always, but an HMD sits best on a bowl with a matching rim or inner lip. Lotus-style devices fit bowls made for them, such as Kaloud Samsaris bowls.
How much is a hookah bowl?
Prices depend on the brand, the material and whether the bowl is handmade. The table above shows the current price of every bowl in stock.
How do I clean a hookah bowl?
Let it cool, empty it, rinse it with warm water and a soft brush, without soap, and let it dry fully. Avoid sudden temperature changes with clay and ceramic.
Will any hookah bowl fit my hookah?
Most bowls fit most hookahs with a rubber grommet. The bowl has to sit tight on the stem to keep the draw airtight, and some modern hookahs use a smaller or larger bowl opening, so check the bowl and the stem before you buy.
