Which Hookah Coals for Your Bowl
Pick your bowl to see the coal shape, size and how many coals to start with, then the coals in stock that fit. Adjust by one coal after the bowl heats up: more for a dense pack or dark leaf, fewer if the smoke turns harsh.

What Is Hookah Charcoal?
Hookah charcoal is the heat source of a hookah: it sits on foil, a screen or a heat management device above the bowl and heats the shisha from above, and the heated shisha produces smoke. Always use charcoal made for hookah, not grill or BBQ charcoal. Hookah charcoal comes in two groups. Natural coconut charcoal is pressed from carbonized coconut shell: it burns clean with low ash, gives no added taste and needs a hookah coal burner to light. Quick light charcoal contains an accelerant, so it starts from a lighter flame.

Coconut cubes
Cocoburn Coconut Hookah Coals
Cocoburn coconut hookah coals come as 25 mm and 26 mm cubes in 1 kg boxes, plus 10 kg and 20 kg master cases for lounges and regular smokers. Compare it with the other brands in the table above.
Step by step

How to Light Hookah Coals
- Coconut charcoal: put the cubes on a hookah coal burner and leave them for about 8–12 minutes. Turn each cube with tongs halfway through so every side catches.
- Check that they are ready: the coal should glow orange on all sides with a thin gray layer of ash. A cube that is still black in spots heats unevenly and can give the smoke a bitter taste.
- Quick light charcoal: hold one tablet with tongs over a lighter flame until it starts to spark, then set it down and wait until the sparking stops and the whole tablet turns gray.
- Place the coals near the rim of the foil, screen or HMD, not in the center, and turn them from time to time so the middle of the bowl does not scorch. Not sure how many? Use the bowl picker above.
Buying guide
How to Choose the Right Hookah Coals
- Match the size to your bowl. 25 mm cubes fit most hookah bowls; 26–27 mm cubes suit large bowls and dark leaf, and lotus head coals suit Lotus-style devices. The bowl picker shows what to start with.
- Pick coconut or quick light. Coconut charcoal for regular hookah smoking at home with a burner; quick light charcoal when you have only a lighter.
- Compare the price per kg, not per box. Packs run from 0.5 kg to 4 kg, so the price of one box says little. The table above sorts every coal in stock by price per kg.
- Check the ash and how it lights. Quality hookah charcoal is dense, keeps its shape on the burner, lights evenly on all sides and holds heat for more than an hour with a slow burn. It leaves little ash, so you clean the foil or HMD less often; a thick ash layer works like insulation and cuts the heat. If a brand cracks, stays black in spots or leaves a lot of ash, try another size or brand.

Sizes and shapes
Hookah Charcoal Sizes and Shapes

Cubes, 25 mm
A classic hookah charcoal size and an easy start for beginners with a standard bowl and foil. A 1 kg box holds about 72 cubes.

Cubes, 26–27 mm
A bigger, denser cube has more charcoal to burn and holds heat longer, so these suit bigger hookah bowls and dark leaf. A 1 kg box holds about 64 cubes of 26 mm or about 54 of 27 mm.

Flats
Lower coals, about 25 × 25 × 15–18 mm, that sit flat on foil or a screen and spread heat over a wider area.

Lotus head and circles
Ring coals made of three curved segments, shaped for Lotus-style heat management devices, which hold the coals in a ring above the bowl.

Quick light tablets
Round 33 mm or 40 mm tablets sold in rolls; they light from a lighter and burn for a shorter time than coconut coals.
Keep them dry

How to Store Hookah Charcoal
Keep hookah charcoal in its closed box or a sealed bag in a dry place, away from the kitchen sink, the bathroom and the hookah base. Coconut charcoal picks up moisture from the air, and damp coals take longer to light, crack and heat unevenly. A 1 kg pack of coconut charcoal for home and a roll of quick light tablets to carry when you travel cover most needs.
Steady heat

Burners, HMDs and Wind Covers
A hookah coal burner lights coconut charcoal evenly on all sides. A heat management device replaces foil, holds the coals and lets you adjust the heat with vents. A wind cover keeps ash in place and the heat steady outdoors.

Questions
Hookah Coals FAQ
What are the different types of hookah coals?
There are two types: coconut coals, pressed from coconut shell charcoal and lit on a burner, and quick light coals, which contain an accelerant and light from a lighter. Coconut coals come as cubes, flats, hexagon and lotus head coals; quick light coals come as round tablets.
Coconut or quick light coals: which should I use?
Coconut charcoal is the usual choice for every smoker at home because it holds heat longer. Quick light coals are handy when you travel or have no burner, since they light from a lighter.
Should I use 2 or 3 coals for hookah?
Start with 3 cubes of 25 mm on a classic bowl with foil or on a phunnel bowl, and with 2 to 3 coals on a heat management device. Once the bowl is hot, add or remove one coal if needed: more for a dense pack or dark leaf, fewer if the smoke turns harsh.
How do I light coconut hookah coals?
Heat them on a hookah coal burner for about 8 to 12 minutes, turning them halfway, until they glow orange on all sides with a thin layer of gray ash. A regular lighter is not enough for coconut coals; it only works for quick light coals.
How long do hookah coals last?
Hookah charcoal makers such as Fumari list about 60 to 90 minutes for coconut charcoal, so one good coal usually lasts more than an hour, and about 20 to 35 minutes for quick light coals. Real heat time depends on the coal size and the bowl.
What size hookah coals should I buy?
25 mm cubes are a classic size that fits most hookah bowls. Choose 26 or 27 mm cubes for bigger bowls and longer sessions, and lotus head or ring coals for Lotus-style heat management devices.
How should I store hookah charcoal?
Keep it in a closed box or sealed bag in a dry place. Coals that pick up moisture take longer to light and heat unevenly.
Why do my hookah coals keep going out?
Usually the coals were not fully lit: coconut coals need about 8 to 12 minutes on a burner until every side glows orange. Damp coals, a thick layer of ash on top and a closed HMD also cool them down; tap the ash off and open the vents.
Where can I buy hookah coals?
Right here: we stock natural coconut coals from 0.5 kg boxes to 20 kg master cases, plus quick light coals. The table above shows every coal in stock with its price per kg.
Where should I light hookah coals?
Light and use hookah coals only in a well-ventilated area: burning charcoal gives off carbon monoxide. Never light coals in a closed room or a car, and let used coals cool completely in a metal container before you throw them away.
