Where are you starting from?
A hookah, or water pipe, consists of a bowl, a stem, a glass base with water and a hose. The coals heat the flavored tobacco in the bowl. When you draw air through the hose, the smoke travels down the stem into the water in the hookah base, bubbles up and comes out through the hose. Read the full guide with every part explained →

Session timeline
Smoking hookah, step by step
What happens from filling the base to cleaning up. Tap a step for the details.
0 min · Fill the base
Pour fresh cold water into the hookah base before every session, so the downstem sits about one inch under the surface; with a glass base you can see the level clearly.
Perfect Water Level for Your Hookah: A Comprehensive Guide →3 min · Assemble and seal
Fit the stem, hose and tray, then pull gently on the hose with your hand over the top to check that all the connections are air tight and nothing leaks.
How To Set Up a Hookah | A 9-Step Guide →5 min · Pack the bowl
Fluff the shisha tobacco and sprinkle it into the bowl in an even layer, loosely, up to about a quarter inch below the rim; on most bowls this also helps avoid clogging the holes.
How to pack a hookah bowl →8 min · Light the coals
Natural coconut coals take about 8 to 12 minutes on a burner until they glow on every side and turn white grey ash at the edges; quick light coals take about a minute.
How to Light Hookah Coals: Everything You Need to Know →20 min · Heat up
Place the coals on opposite edges of the heat management device, or on aluminum foil stretched tight with small holes poked in a spiral pattern with a toothpick, and give the bowl a few minutes to warm up.
How to Light Hookah Coals: Everything You Need to Know →25 min · Enjoy the session
Start smoking with slow, steady draws at a normal breathing pace, a gentle pull of a few seconds. A strong inhale pulls more hot air through the bowl and leaves overheated shisha with a burnt taste. Rotate the coals and tap off the ash every 10 to 15 minutes. When you share, pass the hose after a few puffs and use your own personal or disposable mouth tip.
How To Get More Smoke From Hookah →After · Clean up
Clean your hookah after every session: empty the base, rinse the stem with warm water and a cleaning brush, rinse a washable silicone hose, and let every part dry before the next session.
Ultimate Guide to Proper Hookah Cleaning: Step-by-Step Instructions →How long does a hookah last?
One bowl usually lasts about an hour, and a relaxed session can run from 45 minutes to two hours. A bigger bowl, more shisha tobacco and steady, moderate heat make the smoking session last longer; too many coals burn through the flavor faster.
How to pick your first flavor
Start with one simple flavor you already like, such as mint, grape or watermelon. Once you know what you enjoy, try a two-flavor mix: see our best hookah flavors and best flavor mixes.
What went wrong?
Fix a session that is not going right
Pick what you notice and see the likely cause, what to do and where to read more.
Hookah tastes burnt or bitter
- Likely cause
- Too much heat: too many coals, coals placed too close, or shisha packed up to the rim so it touches the foil or the heat management device. Overheated shisha adds a burnt flavor to the smoke.
- What to do
- Remove one coal or move the coals to the edge, leave a small gap under the heat, and repack the bowl loosely.
Little or no smoke
- Likely cause
- The bowl has not heated up yet, the coals are not fully lit, or the shisha is packed too dense for air to pass.
- What to do
- Light the coals until they are fully lit and glow on every side, give the bowl a few more minutes, then loosen the pack if the draw still feels slow and you do not get enough smoke.
Tight or hard draw
- Likely cause
- The bowl is packed too tight, the holes in the bowl are blocked, or the water level is too high.
- What to do
- Repack the bowl loosely, clear the holes and pour out some water so the downstem sits about one inch deep.
Flavor fades too fast
- Likely cause
- The heat is too high or the bowl holds too little shisha, so the flavor burns off early.
- What to do
- Use fewer coals or a heat management device with vents, rotate the coals more often and fill the bowl a little more.
Air leaks or a weak pull
- Likely cause
- A worn grommet, a loose hose or an unsealed purge valve lets outside air in.
- What to do
- Check every seal with the hand-over-the-bowl test and replace worn grommets with parts made for your hookah.
Water comes up the hose
- Likely cause
- The base is filled too high, so water splashes up when you pull.
- What to do
- Pour some water out until the downstem sits about one inch under the surface.
Coals keep going out
- Likely cause
- The coals were not fully lit, or ash has built up on them and blocks the air.
- What to do
- Light the coals until they glow evenly and tap off the ash with tongs every 10 to 15 minutes.
Shisha tastes flat or dry
- Likely cause
- The shisha has dried out, or the juices settled at the bottom of the pack, so the top leaves have little flavor left.
- What to do
- Stir the shisha in its pack before every session so the juice spreads evenly, keep the pack tightly closed and store it away from heat.
The bowl takes forever to heat up
- Likely cause
- The coals were not fully lit, there are too few of them, or the heat management device is open too wide and lets the heat escape.
- What to do
- Start with fully lit coals, close the vents of the heat management device for the first few minutes, then open them once the smoke appears.
Shisha juice runs down the stem
- Likely cause
- The bowl is overpacked with very wet shisha, so the juice drips through the holes into the stem and the tray.
- What to do
- Drain extra juice before packing, use a phunnel bowl that keeps the juice in the bowl, or add a molasses catcher under the bowl.
Glossary
Hookah terms, explained
The words you will see in our guides and product specs.
- Base
- The glass or acrylic vase at the bottom that holds the water. Also called the vase.
- Stem
- The shaft between the bowl and the base. The smoke travels down through it into the water.
- Downstem
- The lower part of the stem that sits in the water. The water level is measured from its tip.
- Bowl
- The cup on top of the stem that holds the shisha. Made of clay, ceramic, silicone or glass.
- Phunnel bowl
- A bowl with a single raised center hole, so the shisha juices stay in the bowl instead of running down the stem.
- Egyptian bowl
- A traditional bowl with several small holes in the bottom.
- Heat management device (HMD)
- A metal cap that sits on the bowl and holds the coals instead of foil. Vents let you raise or lower the heat.
- Kaloud
- A popular brand of heat management device; the name is often used for any HMD.
- Foil
- Thin aluminum sheet stretched over the bowl and poked with small holes, the classic alternative to an HMD.
- Tray
- The plate under the bowl that catches ash and holds spare coals.
- Grommet
- A rubber or silicone seal between parts, such as bowl and stem or hose and port, that keeps air out.
- Purge valve
- A one-way valve on the stem that lets you blow out stale smoke from the base.
- Diffuser
- A small attachment on the downstem that splits the smoke into many small bubbles, so the session sounds quieter.
- Hose and mouth tip
- The hose carries the smoke from the base to you; the mouth tip is the handle at its end.
- Molasses catcher
- A small cup between the bowl and the stem that collects excess shisha juice.
- Coconut coals
- Natural coals pressed from coconut shells. They take about 8 to 12 minutes to light and burn evenly for a long time.
- Quick-light coals
- Coals with an accelerant that light in about a minute.
- Shisha
- The flavored tobacco smoked in a hookah: tobacco leaf mixed with molasses or honey, glycerin and flavor.
- Packing
- How you fill the bowl with shisha. Fluffy, loose packs let air pass; dense packs restrict the draw.
- Session
- One hookah from the first draw until the shisha is finished, usually about an hour.
- Draw
- How the air feels when you pull on the hose. A tight draw needs effort, an airy draw is light and fast.
- Heat-up
- The first minutes after the coals go on, while the bowl warms up and the smoke builds.
- Mix
- Two or more shisha flavors packed together in one bowl, either layered or blended.
- Premix
- A shisha that the maker sells already blended from several flavors, ready to pack as it is.
- Blonde leaf
- Lightly processed tobacco leaf used in most mainstream shisha, usually wetter and with bright fruit flavors.
- Dark leaf
- Darker, more fermented tobacco leaf used by brands such as Tangiers and Darkside, with a richer tobacco taste.
